Challenges
New challenges and opportunities
Centralized Backup is much more than a central backup over the LAN to a tape library :
• Backup to Disk before staging/cloning to tape is a must : Virtual Tape Library (VTL) technology can be used
• VTL technology, combined with deduplication technology allows to store more backup data on disk
• VTL, deduplication and replication technology allow for a tapeless “backup/restore/disaster recovery” solution
• LAN Free Backups reduces LAN traffic during backup : VTL are designed to be shared by several backup servers
• VMWare Consolidated Backup (VCB) can be integrated in Centralized Backup solutions
• Storage Solution snapshots, either by native or combined with storage virtualization can be used to limit backup impact on the host
Solutions
Centralized Backup to Disk and/or tape
A typical Data Protection Solution implements Centralized Backup with following highlights :
• Central Backup Server for management, administration and monitoring
• Centralized media handling
• Efficient use of backup storage, either disk or tape
• Unified methods for online backup of databases and messaging servers
Limitations of classical centralized backups
Centralized backup solutions have a few limitations :
• The central catalog can be a bottleneck
• The method of “Logical Backup” is not performant, especially for large file servers with many files
• Logical Backup is typically used to do nightly backups and is not designed for “hourly” backups nor for continuous data protection
• Recovery requires restore of the data
Continuous Data Protection (CDP)
Continuous Data Protection – a new look at backup restore
Continuous Data Protection (CDP) gives a new method of Disk-to-Disk backup. CDP technology creates a running journal of storage write activity, with updates being logged every time a change occurs to the system. When trouble strikes, technicians use a time-based snapshot of an application server created just prior to the event to restore application services to a known stable point in time.
FalconStor CDP gateway appliances are configured in the storage area network. Software running on the CDP appliance provides any point in time application level recovery images using Continuous Data Protection (CDP) technology.
CDP for Disaster Recovery
FalconStor has extended the CDP concept to work between remote data centers and refers to this capability as Continuous Data Replication (CDR). CDR can be used to recover an application to a stable point in time at a standby remote data center during a site, regional, or metropolitan disaster.
CDP integrates with VMWare
Snapshot agents and Snapshot Director for VMWare ESX ensure consistent recovery points.
Fail-over can be handled by Site Recovery Manager (SRM) which thanks to the FalconStor Site Recovery Manager Adapter (SRA).
FalconStor’s CDP Technology Highlights :
• Instant Recoverability – FalconStor CDP permits instant data restoration to any point in time, and recovers business applications in minutes.
• Protection for all environments -Protection across all heterogeneous storage devices (including servers, workstations, and laptops) and storage topologies (NAS, SAN, and DAS)
• Protection for All Types of Databases & Applications – FalconStor CDP protects your most crucial data: databases, applications, email servers and operating systems with complete transactional recovery – rather than only protecting closed files.
• Granular Selection of Recovery Points – FalconStor CDP solutions give you more flexible, targeted Recovery Point Objectives (RPO), through the ability to recover to an Any-Point-in-Time version of the data that is needed. Since backup is continuous, you can choose from a multitude of recoverable versions.
• Database Aware Recovery - Application-aware database agents for transactional consistent recovery of active data for near-zero RTO
• Event Aware Recovery - Event book marking for on-demand point-in-time data recovery
• Offsite Protection – FalconStor’s continuous data replication (CDR) continuously and securely transmit your changing backup data offsite, for more complete, efficient and reliable data protection.
Measurable ROI and Rapid Time-to-Value :
• Lower expenses : FalconStor CDP provides weeks of online protection, eliminating the need for multiple tape backups and enabling tape to be used for its natural purpose -- nightly backups for offsite archival. Ease of operation and management dramatically reduces personnel costs as well.
• Higher availability : Instant restore increases application availability and reduces costly downtime.
• Reduced capital investments : FalconStor CDP can be configured with inexpensive SATA disk as nearline storage, enabling high performance storage currently used for data protection to be redeployed for critical applications
